1067 A silver wine funnel London (UK) 1784

This wine funnel is typical of london-made funnels of the 1780s. It has a cup shaped bowl perforated in a geometical pattern, and a tang to allow it to be attached to a punch bowl without its spout. The detachable spout is tapered and cranked.

A funnel performs several functions. First the silver in the bowl reflects light and enables the clarity of the wine to be assessed as it is being poured from the bottle into the decanter; when any sediment is seen, the process can be halted. Second, the perforations prevent any errant pieces of cork from being decanted. Third, the cranked spout sends the wine gently down the side of the decanter, preventing it from splashing and thus over-aerating.
