1124 A sterling silver wine funnel

A George IV silver wine funnel by Charles Fox. The deeply gadrooned bowl is an unusual feature, and it has a shell tab which enables the funnel to be used without its detachablke spout over a punch bowl. It also has a boldly gadrooned cast rim. The spout is cranked to send the wine down the sides of the decanter. Within the funnel is a detachable ring to which a fine muslin filter may be sewn. It bears a full set of Hallmarks for London 1825 and the maker's mark of Charles Fox.

A funnel performs several functions. First the silver in the bowl reflects light and enables the clarity of the wine to be assessed as it is being poured from the bottle into the decanter; when any sediment is seen, the process can be halted. Second, the perforations prevent any errant pieces of cork from being decanted. Third, the cranked spout sends the wine gently down the side of the decanter, preventing it from splashing and thus over-aerating.
