1165 A Composite Stem Wine Glass

This English drinking glass has a rounded funnel bowl resting on a triple annulated knop above an inverted light baluster stem with double series opaque twist and a basal ball knop. The glass rests on a low conical foot. Well, that is a technichal description, but we feel this glass is more than simply a summary of its parts! Also, it is in perfect and unrestored condition.

The quality and complexity of this glass makes the attribution to a master glassworker a very real one. The bowl is finely drawn and without blemish - no obvious 'striations' usually seen on glasses of this date. The stem, made in two parts, is not only pleasing aesthetically, but also is a fine example of English craftsmanship in this field.

Like most English wine glasses of this time, the bowl capacity is small - it was only intended for a single draught of wine. To read more of wine drinking habits, please refer to The Book of Wine Antiques.
