3006 A Fine Sugar-Loaf Decanter Engraved CLARET
This is a very good example of an engraved sugar-loaf decanter which is nicely engraved for CLARET. The shape is known as a 'sugar loaf' because in the late 18th century, sugar (and salt) were sold in solid blocks of this shape, and this is the name which was used at the time in describing decanters of this form. It has a disc stopper with a bevelled scalloped edge which is probably original to the decanter.
The legend 'CLARET' is in bold letters in a cusped cartouche reminiscent of escutcheon wine labels of the 1730s and 40s, and is 'suspended from a 'chain' of loose form. Surrounding the cartouche are fronds of lily-of-the-valley a stylised rose and bunches of grapes with vine leaves and tendrils.
The decanter is in excellent bright condition, holds a full bottle and is eminently suitable for use.
