3041 A French Mechanical Decanting Machine/Bottle Cradle

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a fine mechanical decanting machine in the form of a gun carriage with large spoked wheels - two large ones at the front and one small one behind.  While the frame is simple, the wheels are delicately cast with neo-classical motifs.

The mechanism is activated by rotating the smallest wheel at the back of the carriage and the action is firm and steady.

We feel there is a strong possibility that the whole piece was originally silver plated, and on first examination it appears to be intact - just covered with a lacquer to give the impression of it being bronze!

It can be seen from the illustration that the carriage is best suited to a full bottle of Burgundian shape.
