4034 A Tall Turquoise Panel-Cut Decanter

This is a pretty shade of turquoise or pale teal.  The narrow cylindrical body is cut with panels which extend through the neck.  The scalloped rim is widely everted to form a pouring lip.  It has a hollow stopper of square section with large facets.

This style of decanter enjoyed a brief fashion in the mid-19th century, and is seen in various colours.  In "Great British Wine Accessories 1550 - 1900" two similar decanters can be seen (pl. 7/41), one in emerald green, the other in amethyst.

Decanters like this are eminently suitable for white wine.

The stopper of this decanter may not be original, although it is precisely the correct pattern.  It (the stopper) has also sustained a little damage to its base, although this can hardly be seen when it is in position.

As can be seen, it stands very well with the set of 6 wine glasses we currently have (4023).
