4040 A Silver-Mounted Claret Jug

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a really lovely and  practical claret jug with a plain silver rim and hinged lid.  It is just the job for a romantic dinner a deux - or more!  The compressed globular body is plain, but very slightly ribbed vertically, but the ribbing is on the inside so cannot be felt.  The jug rests on a small foot and has a loop handle connecting the body and the cylindrical neck.

The silver has the full London hallmarks for 1889 and the makers' mark of Edgar Finlay and Hugh Taylor of both London & Birmingham, and who traded in the name of Horace Woodward & Co., having taken over the firm of that name.

The jug is in fine unrestored condition and holds a full bottle of wine with ease.

Date: 1889

Dimensions: 6", 15.3 cm. High
