4041 An Irish Mahogany Coaster

Click on the images to see more detail

There can be little doubt that this coaster was made in Ireland, as it exhibits features that are seen on other, particularly dining-room, furniture.  The horizontally ribbed sides with their ebonised upper and lower ribs echo the edges of Irish dining tables, peat buckets and other accessories.  The coaster is taller than average, requiring the use of more valuable wood - another Irish trait.

The coaster is a generous size with a ring-turned base, and it retains a good patination.  The original baize is no longer present underneath.
