4071 A Georgian Ship's Decanter with Cut Decoration.

This is not just a ship's decanter, but an excellent and genuine Georgian example in fine condition.  It holds a full bottle to just below the cutting, and will hold a litre easily.

The decanter has a conical body, the upper part with slice-, or panel-cutting.  It has 4 neck rings, also cut in unison with the upper body and neck, and the lip is nicely everted - something which complements the overall shape.  The decanter is heavy because the glass was blown thicker to take the cutting.   It is fitted with a target or bull's eye stopper, which looks to be original.

Ship's decanters of the period 1790 - 1820 are distinctly uncommon, but this is a better-than-average example, and to use an expression which used to be often heard in the antiques trade - "it stands well".
