4089 An Electroplated Wine Label for MASTICA

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a lightweight electroplated label, but the interest lies in its apparently unique name - MASTICA.

Rectangular with canted corners it has a raised moulded edge, and was die-stamped.  Where the name has been engraved, copper shows through the silver plating.

Mastica is originally a liquor seasoned with mastic, a resin gathered from the mastic tree a small evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean region and cultivated on the island of Chios.  It is a brandy-based liqueur native to the island of Chios. It often accompanies desserts made with almonds and is served at wedding feasts as a digestif. It has a sweet smell and flavour similar to liquorice.  It is served cold or at room temperature but usually with ice. It turns white when poured over ice or mixed with water and form small crystals when frozen.  (This paragraph by courtesy of Wikipedia)
