4112 & 5023 A Very Fine PAIR of MAGNUM Cut Glass Claret Jugs

Click on the images to see more detail

This truly is a magnificent pair of claret jugs of magnum capacity each.   We were very fortunate to buy them at different times and in separate locations - quite an exceptional and serendipitous coincidence!

The jugs are of oval section, and the bodies are profusely cut in panels with hobnail cutting in large oval panels, separated by narrow vertical panels of diamond cutting.  The necks are panel-cut with notched edges, and the balloon-shaped stoppers are cut to match with star-cut tops.  The jugs rest on petaline feet, star-cut on their undersides.  The jugs have plain loop handles with flattened thumb-pieces.  One jug had a stopper which was not original, but we have had a replacement made which is almost impossible to detect as a replacement.

A single claret jug of this quality is a rare and special piece, and we were amazingly lucky to chance across a second one which exactly matches.  They would make a powerful statement in a dining room.
