5013 A Very Large Coaster or Small Tray
This is a fine large coaster or small tray. It is certainly sufficiently large for almost any ship's decanter, but it would equally serve as a tray for three or four glasses of wine.
While the coaster/tray itself is of shaped circular outline, the edge is a series of ogee curves of a type seen on some early mahogany coasters (see Great Brisish Wine Accessories 1550 - 1900 p 206, ill 10/36), and this type of coaster is considered among the earliest. Some, like the illustrated example are inlaid with brass stringing lines, but this one is inlaid with dark and light wood stringing cut at an angle - and a very attractive feature it is, too.
Unlike so many antique trays and coasters, this one is not cracked or split, and there is no discernible restoration.
