5077 a Rare and Plain Glass Wine Taster

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a very unusual wine taster made of clear glass.  It is utterly plain and without any decoration, but with a loop handle to one side.  The construction of the handle suggests strongly that it is very late 19th century (similarly made handles are seen on other types of glass of that date).

Wine tasters of this pattern have not been previously recorded, which begs the question "Is it really a wine taster?".  Quite simply there seems to be no alternative use for which it was made!

Date: c.1880 - 1920

Dimensions: 4.4", 11.3 cm bowl diameter
