5141 A Good Pair of Black Lacquer Coasters

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a good pair of black lacquer papier mâche coasters decorated with flowers, foliage and butterflies in two shades of gilding.  THe decoration imitates the Chinese originals, in that the lacquer is raised in places - not merely painted on.  The sides of the coasters are mildly bulbous - typical of early 19th century models.

There is one small area (about .5" 1.2 cm) where the lacquer has come away on the rim, and this would be simple to restore, but otherwise the coasters are in very good condition.  They retain their original baize bases and the interior surface is in good order.

Date: c.1810

Dimensions: 5.4", 13.7 cm. diameter (5" internal)
