5149 A Fine Pair of Shaft & Globe Decanters

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a lovely pair of Victorian decanters of high quality and in excellent unrestored condition. The almost spherical bodies are sharply cut with hobnail cutting of great precision above which is a band of wheel cut decoration of roses and thistles with flowers and foliage; there are no daffodils, leeks or shamrocks, so why England and Scotland are represented - without Wales or Ireland is a mystery.

The necks are panel cut with notched edges, the notching giveing excellent 'grip'; this leaves the rim of hexagonal section.  The stoppers are of inverted, but similar shape and with facet cutting above the panel-cut waisted shanks.

This is a pair of decanters a distinct 'cut above' (if you'll forgive the pun) the usual.

Date: c.1860
