5186 A Pair of Reeded Rectangular Labels for Port and W.Wine

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a simple pair of wine lables of rectangular outline with canted corners, one for PORT, the other for W*WINE.  The only concession to decoration are the reeded edges.

Among the more interesting of silversmiths of the late 18th and early 19th centuries are the partnership of Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson which lasted from 1783 until 1816, and to judge from extant objects was a prolific one.  Their work is characterised as neat, elegant and of good quality.  They made these labels.

The labels are well marked, although for some unknown reason the London Assay Office mark was omitted.  This is not a very unusual happening.
