5200 An Unusual Black-Painted Bin Label

Click on the images to see more detail

This is a highly unusual bin label being well made of wood and with a shaped top edge. The whole surface has been stained black and the painted legend has been professionally executed in pale lettering.  It reads:-OFFLEY'S, 1908. Bottled September 1910, Laid down by M.C. BUSZARD, K.C., Treasurer.

The inscription suggests that the label may well have come from a lawyer's practice or dining club or from a quarter-sessions mess cellar, as 'KC' presumably meant 'King's Counsel'.  Offley continue to this day, but I was unable to find any of the 1908 vintage on the Internet (there is a bottle of 1896, however!).

Date: c.1910
