5201 A Boxwood Folding Dipstick for Measuring Barrels

This is a rare barrel dipstick for use by a vintner or brewer.   It is made of boxwood with brass fittings by I & D Smallwood of Birmingham.

Smallwoods were makers of measuring instrumennts and spirit levels from at least 1829 and exisited until 1999, when they were taken over by G GIbson & Co.

This ruler is calibrated in gallons, cylinder bottles and 'bulge bottles'. and is intended for measuring barrels of differing capacities.  It is in good condition, having not been cleaned and re-varnished and it probaly dates from the early years of the 20th century.
