5241 A Fine Set of 4 Rectangular Wine Labels by Robert Barker
"Considering the superb quality of her work...." is how one paragraph begins about Susannah Barker in the standard reference work on wine labels. Indeed her work is characterised by heavy gauge silver, innovative and pleasing design and general strong appeal. Robert, her son appears to have inherited his mother's considerable talents.
These labels were made by Robert Barker in 1794 and display all the qualities in his mother's work. They are of surprisingly good gauge, are well-shaped with strong curvature in three dimensions, the piercing is accurate and crisp, and the wine names are innovatively curved to leave room for the crest in the centre top of each label.
I was not particularly looking for labels, when I saw these, but their quality and condition stood out and I felt they were irresistable! I hope you feel the same!
The crest - a talbot gorged - is shared among 63 families, so it is not possible to determine the original owner, or even his family. There is a readable account of what a talbot is in Wikipedia.
