6024 A Pair of Champagne Pliers or Nips

Click on the images to see more detail

This pair of champagne pliers or nips are a product of the great surge in champagne accessories that appeared soon after its widespread acceptance in the late 19th century.  Quite typically they are nickel plated.

The pliers are to break the wire cage which secures a champagne cork, while the brush is to clean the top of the bottle.  The other 'arm' of the pliers has a serrated end to ease away the foil capsule.

The nickel plating is largely intact with minimal rust showing through the plating.
