6051 A Ruby Red Tall Cylindrical Decanter

Click on the images to see more detail

An ideal ruby wedding present?  Perhaps, but this is a very respectable decanter made in the opening years of Queen Victoria's reign.  It is utterly plain, having an almost cylindrical body and slightly tapering neck.  The stopper is a plain tapering hexagon and the peg (that part which inserts into the neck of the decanter) is clear glass.

Red is a difficult colour as glass that is redin its entirety appears black, so this is overcome by fusing a thin layer of red glass over clear.  This is a technique called 'casing'.
