6508 A Pair of Cut and Engraved Shaft & Globe Decanters

Click on the images to see more detail

This is quite simply, a very good pair of Victorian shaft & globe decanters.  The body of each is a compressed sphere, above which rises a long, very slightly waisted neck.  The body is cut with a band of oval printies or olives near the base, while a little above the mid-point is an engraved band of 'Greek key' decoration.  The underside is star-cut, while the neck is panel cut.  The hollow balloon-shape stopper is cut with printies and with a star-cut apex.

Each decanter is numbered as are the stoppers, proving that the stoppers are original to the decanters.  The glass is very clear and bright, making these an excellent pair of decanters to use.  The star-cut bases refract light through wine enabling the decanters to function well.

Date: c.1870

Dimensions: 10.9 ", 27.8 cm high incl. stoppers
