9270 A Labelled Giltwood Wall Bracket

This is a rare gilded wood wall bracket and it bears the bold maker's label on the back of it.  It is in the neo-rococo style which became popular in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century, having originated c.1815.

The form of this asymmetric bracket is of a salamander emerging from a leafy grotto.  The bracket has a shaped serpentine top.

The back of the bracket has pasted to it the maker's label of W Wright of 22 Wardour Street, Soho Square, London, and it advertises the fact that he was 'Carver, Gilder, and Picture Restorer to Princess Sophia of Gloucester'

Princess Sophia (1773 - 1844)  a great granddaughter of George II and niece of George III, never married nor had any children. She lived at New Lodge in Winkfield, near Windsor in Berkshire and died on 29 November 1844 and is buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor.

The gilding of this bracket is in need of 'refreshment', although from a distance it looks to be in good order.
