9338 A Fine Set of 6 Mahogany Dining Chairs

This is a set of SIX chairs made of the earliest variety of mahogany which was imported into England after 1724, when the restrictions on imported timbers were lifted.  They are very heavy for such a lightly-designed chair.

This model of chair was inspired by Chinese models and were known as 'bended back' chairs.  They are shaped to accord with the human anatomy, and are a design which have been much applauded for their elegance and practicality.  The backs have delicately pierced inverted vase-shaped splats, and the frames are finely made.

There are minor restorations to the base of the splats, but generally they are in excellent condition.  The upholstery to the drop-in seats is recent, but in keeping with the style of the time they were made.
