9553 A single sterling silver coaster
This coaster is made of heavy guage silver. It has a gadrooned rim and the bulbous sides are deorated with recurring tongues, interspersed with bellflowers. It has a turned beechwood base.
It was common practice to mark silver coasters around the rim of the base. However to insert the wood base, that silver had to be worked after the hallmarks were impressed. This re-working usually reduced the clarity of the marks, and sometimes removed them all together.
