9567 A Fine Scarlet Lacquered Coaster with Gilt Decoration
This coaster was made in the early 19th century, and is lacquered on a wooden base. The outside of the body is decorated with gilded stylised foliage and butterflies, the gilding being in two colours, and shaded to provide a fine, subtle effect. The rim of the coaster is also gilded with a narrow band of foliage, while the interior is plain red.
The coaster is in excellent condition, with very little abrasion having taken place on the decoration. The inside of the base has degraded a little, but it looks well, having had minor restoration (to the interior only).
Many lacquered coasters are based totally on papier mâché bodies which are lightweight and susceptible to damage. They are very often beyond restoration. However some of the finer quality ones have both papier mâché and wood in their construction which makes them considerably more robust. These same coasters tend also to have superior decoration; this is one of them.
