9771 A Large Mahogany Coaster on Casters

This unusual coaster was probably made to accommodate a ship's decanter - or even cheese or some other delicacy on the dining table. It has a well turned top surface, and the base has three lacquered brass casters with leather wheels slightly inset.

This variety of coaster occasionally has a paper label glued to the base stating its makers name - Mein of Kelso. Mein was furniture maker to The Duke of Roxburgh whose family home is Floors Castle in Kelso. He also supplied the dining room furniture to Chipchase Castle in Northumberland.
