9830 A Pottery Bin Label for MADEIRA

This is a standard 'coathanger' shaped bin label, and the back is clearly impressed WEDGWOOD. It is thinly potted and the legend is fine and well-drawn. Below the makers' impression are two impressed crosses or four-leaf flowers; these are probably the journeyman's mark so that Wedgwood knew who made them - and who to pay!

At first sight, this may seem to be late 18th century, but these were made to the same pattern for many decades, so it may be as late as 1880.

The upper section is left 'in the biscuit', that is, unglazed, so that further information can be pencilled onto it - Blandy's 1890, for example. The lower section has a slightly blueish hue to the glazing.

The suspension hole has been damaged and repaired, but visually it is in excellent condition.

Date: c.1880

Price: UK customers £140, US customers $230
