9864 A Victorian Papier Mache Coaster
This is a rare coaster of the early Victorian period and in exceptional condition. With its everted sides and prettily-shaped rim, it is designed to hold a shaft & globe decanter.
It is very rare to fine a coaster decorated on its inside surface - most are decorated on the outside. The decoration is in the neo-rococo fashion which blossomed (almost literally) from about 1815, but the form suggests a rather later date. It is painted with roses and a morning glory in polychrome and has gilded rococo scrolls.
Date: c.1820 - 50
