9929 A Charming Wheel Engraved Blue Carafe

Click on the images to see more detail

Most mid-19th. century coloured decanters fall into one of about 3 standard patterns, but this one is different. First, the colour is not the usual deep rich blue, but a gentler, softer shade. Second, it has no stopper - it was aways a carafe. Third, the vine-engraved decoration runs all the way from the base to the rim.

It is a most pleasing form and an attractive hue. Amazingly there is no price premium for its unusual and attractive features.
