9950 A Simple T Corkscrew by Robert Jones & Son
This is a simple antique T corkscrew. Although it is bereft of any embellishments, it is neveretheless a good working instrument. There is no brush to clean the top of the bottle, there isn't even a suspension ring - just a helix, shank and handle. But that is not the half of it!
The helix is a full-length cyphered worm, and the handle is cocus wood. More importantly, the shank is stamped R JONES & SON, who were eminent Birmingham makers of corkscrews, and made some exceptional pieces. There is a very similar corkscrew in my 'Great British Wine Accessories 1550 - 1900' illustrated on pl. 3/37.
Date: c.1860
