4067 A pair of black lacquer papier mâché coasters
This pair of papier mâché coasters are typical examples of a very popular vogue at the beginning of the 19th century. They have gilded decoration of stylised vine leaves and tendrils with suspended fringed drapery with paterae, all on a black background. The interiors are black.
Papier mâché coasters were made in large numbers, and were usually black, although dark green ones are sometimes seen as are red ones.
These are in quite good condition with little damage and the gilding only a little rubbed.
