This is a very handsome oval copper cooking vessel, probably a braising pot, but it would equally serve as a wine cooler at considerably less cost than a traditional mahogany one! It will easily hold a dozen bottles - probably nearer to 2 dozen. It is made of copper, tin-plated on the inside for hygenic purposes when making large batches of food, and it has bronze handles.
The construction of this piece is interesting - the seams are dovetailed (see 2nd image) which was a method used in the 18th and early 19th centuries and superseded by turn-over seams. There is a vertical seam at one end and the base is also seamed (see last image). The sheets of copper are cut with dovetailed edges which were then brazed together to form a watertight and flat joint. The later (late 19th and 20th centuries) seams stood proud of the surface are much less attractive - but cheaper to make.
One side is engraved with the initials RD over 1 signifying that it was No.1 in a batterie de cuisine and that it belonged to RD.
