This really delightful small object is formed as a stylised scallop shell with an annular handle mounted with vine leaves, tendrils and grapes. The shell is finely matted and burnished bright in contrasting lines. It was made in Birmingham (UK) in 1862 by George Unite, a well considered silversmith.
While this is small as wine tasters go, there are some who insist that this model is a tea caddy spoon. This may be the case, but the fruiting vine decoration on the handle could be considered as a clear allusion to its use - or not as the case may be.
