A 'London Rack' corkscrew

Code: 5063

This is a good working corkscrew with a full worm or helix, its original brush, the handle has a fine bright patina, and the mechanism retains much of its original surface of a copper wash.

There were numerous corkscrew patents and registrations during the 19th century, one of the most enduring of which was William Lund's London Rack.  The patent was taken out in 1855 (2nd April), and remained popular for the remainder of the century and into the next.

This corkscrew is not stamped Lund's London Rack, which suggests it was made by a copyist later in the 19th century.  It is in excellent condition.

Date: c1880

Dimensions: 7.5", 19 cm. long on full extension.
