6614 A fine and rare pair of Georgian magnum decanters

Code: 6614

This is a fine and rare pair of George III magnum decanters.  Antique magnum decanters are seldom seen on the market and 18th century examples, even less frequently, so it is not surprising that pairs are very much rarer still.  These were made in the closing years of the 18th century - say c.1785-90 and typically of the period, they are simple tapering form, without neck rings and just slightly everted lips.  They have bevelled inverted pear-shaped stoppers - often called in glass circles "lozenge" stoppers - but I can see nothing lozengy about the shape!

The decanters are devoid of any decoration, but they are fine quality being well-blown and of substantial weight, at a time when glass was sold by weight.  They are in excelent condition, with just moderate wear to the undersides as one would expect of a decanters of this age.  They pour well and are completely fit for purpose.

English, c. 1790

13.7", 34.6 cm high incl. stoppers.
