This is a fine pair of coasters made of papier mâché in the opening years of the 19th century - c.1800 - 1810. They were made in England in the chinoiserie style and are of exceptional quality. This is evidenced by the quality of the decoration and of the lacquer. With sprays of flowers and foliage with gilded enhancements and with butterflies these are very 'true to period'.
The coasters have a brown and gilding lineat their rims and lower edges and would originally have had baize glued to the undersides; this is currently missing, but we do have some very good modern baize we could apply if requested.
Please refer to our sold archive, page 4, for a pair of coasters probably from the same workshops.
